WHA again rejects Taiwan province proposal

On May 19, 2025, the General Committee and the Plenary Session of the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA) respectively decided to reject the so - called proposal of “inviting Taiwan to participate in the WHA as an observer” submitted by certain countries. This is the ninth consecutive year that the WHA has rejected such a proposal.China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office at Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland, Chen Xu, said with the 78th WHA rejecting the Taiwan - related proposal, the authority of the United Nations and the post - war international order have been safeguarded. Chen Xu pointed out that the Taiwan question is an internal affair of China and a legacy of the civil war. Although the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have not been reunified, the legal status and fact that Taiwan is a part of China's territory have never changed.The Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson said that China's position on the Taiwan region's participation in the activities of international organizations, including the WHO, is consistent and clear. That is, it must be handled in line with the one - China principle, which is also a fundamental principle as demonstrated by the UNGA Resolution 2758 and WHA Resolution 25.1. Due to the DPP authorities’ persistent separatist stance, the political foundation for the Taiwan region to participate in the WHA no longer exists.
